The Gallery is committed to curating more than 12 exhibitions each year and is responsible for providing access to touring exhibitions otherwise unavailable to residents of the Manning and surrounds. A number of education programs are developed by the Gallery each year to involve community participation with the aim of increasing public access to, and understanding of, art. In 2004 the Manning Regional Art Gallery began the Aboriginal Traditional Art Revival project, which includes the research and identification of appropriate local Indigenous artefacts for collection, as well as an oral and photographic history research of over 20 local Elders. The Gallery is supported by Friends of the Manning Regional Art Gallery, a volunteer group of supporters who provide a link between the Gallery and the community. Their activities raise the profile of visual arts in the Manning Valley. For more information on events and exhibitions at Manning Regional Art Gallery, visit the Friends of the Manning Regional Art Gallery website at www.fogsmanningvalley.com.au The Gallery also manages the Greater Taree City Council collection

What do mud crabs and wine have in common? Vintner, Tony Hammond has created a unique range of fruity liqueurs, all sourced direct from his own farm.

What a unique winery! Set on the banks of the mighty Manning River at its tributary, Ghinni Ghinni Creek, the vineyards are named to honour the ghinni ghinni (or mud crab as it’s known in the local Aboriginal dialect) and is distinguished by its distinctive mud crab logo.

But there’s a more modern history that has led to the very special wines produced here. Vintner, Tony Hammond, once ran a dairy farm on this land, until radical changes to the industry around the year 2000 dictated a new direction. He diversified, turning the rich soil to host plantings of raspberries, blueberries and other delectable fruits, whose juicy pulp now produce a specialist style of fruit and vegetable-based wines.

Tony Hammond from Ginni Ginni Winery

It was a fortuitous decision that turned days of hard labour in the milking shed to seasons of sheer joy at creating a satisfying new enterprise. “It’s not work if you love doing it!” Hammond says now.

Vestiges of the past remain, however, and Ghinni’s tasting room, adapted from a one-time calves’ pen, retains the rustic appeal of the old farm.

Ghinni Wines now produce a range of fruity liqueurs sourced direct from the farm – mead, blueberry, plum and chilli and raspberry are just a few. All go well with desserts or as a base for mixed drinks and the chilli liqueur works particularly well with seafood.

A new ginger variety is being fermented and mulberries, peaches, pears, mangoes and pumpkins have all been planted for future harvests and wine-making.

Bottles are $20 each, or a sampling of all six current flavours are boxed in western red cedar and dressed with cedar shavings, for gift-giving.

Hammond recommends mixing raspberry liqueur with Champagne for picnic race days or other special occasions. Cheers!

Ghinni Wines, on the Pacific Highway 5 km north of Taree.

Great Lakes Winery is a real ‘find’… so many people keep coming back because they feel welcome, and it is simply a beautiful spot to relax.

The wines speak for themselves – a great range is on offer, with most palates being catered for … from dry to sweet. There is always at least one wine in the range that suits the taste! Everyone is welcome at Great Lakes Winery – don’t feel like you have to know anything about wine to come to this winery for a tasting. The philosophy of ‘taste it and see if you like it’ is all you need to know and is practised at Great Lakes Winery.

Having bought the winery in a pretty run down condition back in 2000, Steve and Robyn have created a destination for locals and tourists. Year after year regulars return, interested to discover the new vintage wines and catch up with what’s new – newcomers are also very welcome! The winery is constantly evolving.

The ‘rustic outdoor room’ has been created from the existing old bails (from when the property was a dairy farm) and is a wonderful, undercover, cool space great for groups and functions, positioned beautifully at the top of the ‘back paddock’. Having grown in popularity enormously in the past 8 years, Great Lakes Winery hosts groups from all over the country. Steve has a developed an impressive reputation for delivering an informative and interactive ‘hosted tasting’, with feedback along the lines of “The best wine tasting I have ever been to,” being cited constantly. Word is getting out, with many advanced bookings for group tastings and luncheons!

Steve from Great Lakes Winery

While the wine is resting and the functions have eased, Steve finds time to take good care of the black Angus herd of beef cattle that has grown over the past few years. Applying sustainable farming practices, Great Lakes Great Beef has been born and supplies hormone free, milk and grass fed yearling beef to its customers. While a ‘tree change’ to some people may invoke thoughts of relaxing on the verandah with a glass of wine, the Great Lakes Winery family have created three businesses to keep them occupied and have made the tree change life something very special that they would like to share with you.
