90 Days of Summer
There are no more excuses for being bored or not knowing what to do this stellar season – summer 2010 is destined to be more glamorous than ever, back to back with action packed days and long, excitement filled nights.
Summer is merely moments away, and frankly, I can’t wait. The beach beckons, those summer parties and all day BBQs (where a sausage on a single piece of bread with some sauce to garnish has never tasted so gourmet), and balmy nights are calling with their chilled summer beats.
In all honesty, you can only go to so many parties and hit so many beaches before it gets a little tired. Never fear! Here are a few extra curricular activities and beauty dos to keep you on your toes this summer!
Have a picnic: break out your inner chef extraordinaire and organise a summer picnic at a local park or jetty with your mates. If you can’t be bothered trekking, spread a blanket out in your backyard, or on the beach, and hey presto! Instant picnic.
Get into Bingo: Bingo is where it’s at right now. Get a group of your mates and head to the local bowling club for some bingo lovin’ fun.
Go bowling: bare foot bowls is a great time passer for a Sunday summer session (of intense bowling, of course). Check out your closest bowling club for more details.
Snap happy: take some happy snaps of your local area. Head out with your digi cam, or even better if you can get your hands on a Polaroid camera for some instant gratification. You can create some great artsy shots by playing with lighting and exposure. Channel your inner Annie Leibovitz and take a picture every day of summer, then compile them in a scrapbook (or Facey album) for a memorable reminisce on those dismal winter nights.
Deep sea fishing: also known as deep drop fishing, can be fun and challenging at the same time (note to self – take Travelcalm prior to departing the marina, to give it time enough to take effect).
While it is similar to fishing in a lake or river, it is not identical. This is due to the gear used and the conditions you are fishing in. There are fishing charters departing the Hastings River on a daily basis.
The Yoga Shala: armed with a towel or yoga mat, start the day with yoga on the grass at Town Beach. Classes combine gentle stretches and breathing exercises and are suitable for anyone, regardless of age and experience.
Get in touch with your inner zen and meet on the grassy area near the lifesaving tower every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 8am (and every day in the school hols). Classes are for one hour and will set you back $12. For more details, contact Denis Juelicher on 6583 7730.
Road trip: looking for one last summer hoorah? Taking a roadtrip may be just what you need. Granted, not everyone can be as lucky as me to be spending a week on a yacht in the Whitsundays over summer; however, a road trip is guaranteed to satisfy your inner adventurer.
No matter if you’re visiting your granny a few hours away or travelling cross-country, getting there is half the fun! Coastal towns like South West Rocks and Forster are great day trip destinations. Or for something a little more serious, head north for a few days, stopping intermittently along the way to take pictures, check out landmarks and drive the scenic routes.
Now that you have your days filled, it’s on to the finer things like which blush to wear with this peach gloss and what coloured top to team with those mint green chinos?
Besides the usual summer beauty trends – beach hair and tanned limbs – here’s the run down of all the newest looks to emerge from summer 2010. The only question is, which one will you be wearing this summer?
Trends we are seeing in the makeup department: to add warmth to fair skin sans self-tanner, go for a creamy, honey-tone blush. Dab shimmering copper shadow on eyelids and rosy bronze gloss on lips and – voila! Say hello to a summery complexion.
For weekend wonderful, go for a glossy lolly pink lip. It’s feminine, eye-catching and screams casual cool without being too over-the-top.
A hairy affair: believe it or not, sixties-inspired tressesv are back, so don’t shy away from channelling a Betty Draper-esque bob. As long as strands look soft and not overdone – tease responsibly – you’ll be in tip-top shape.
Plaits are also back in full force, twisted and tied in a variety of ways. Side swept partings and fluffy finishes give the look a summery beach feel; we can smell the sea salt already. Everything from smaller braids and fish tail plaits, which have been described as “church meets Ibiza”, are prevalent this summer. The choice is literally endless. Bring on the braids.
Fashion is bright and bold this summer; print textures and the colour white have never been hotter. Long maxi dresses and cute cropped chinos are core wardrobe pieces this season.
A basic white tee, black jumpsuit and a pair of wedges are high on the top of my ‘must purchase’ list . Colours like yellow, orange and tan are great basics than can work in with most staples this season, like denim and white.
Accessories this summer are soft. From rope jewellery in bold hues and neutral cord belts to straw paper hats – everything is pliable.
Whatever look you are rockin’, accessory you are donning or activity you fancy this sunny season, it’s all about getting outdoors and loving the life you live.
